Still Life Paintings

Art Start students made still life paintings using tempera on canvas panels.  This project covered many art concepts!  First the artists learned how to draw objects in perspective, showing more than one side at a time as well as shadows to make them look "3D" (see cube and cylinder, left).  

Then they put this practice to use by drawing real objects from observation. Two of our three still life arrangements are shown in the photos above.  After they finished drawing the still life using pencil on canvas board, students learned about the color wheel and practiced color mixing. (Below left) Each student mixed tints, shades, secondary colors and compliments on individual palettes.  (See Sophia at work, below right)  The finished paintings can be seen below.  Beautiful!
