Paper Mache Bugs

Art Start October 2013

Art Start students made giant paper mache bugs! They started by building armatures with newspaper, foil, wire, drinking straws and tape (see Lexi's cicada armature, above left). Then they spent two classes adding layers of paper mache, dipping newspaper strips in wheat paste and spreading them over the armature (see Max, above center), allowing the bugs to dry between layers. The final step was to paint with tempera (above right).  Wings were added with glue-stiffened cheese cloth and antennae were made with wire. Scroll down to see them all!  (Thanks to Art for Small Hands for the idea.)
