Art Start
Printmaking Tile Patterns
Art Start students explored block printing with this project.  For inspiration, they looked at a PowerPoint presentation featuring a
variety of tile designs from around the world, then sketched their own tile designs.  They chose their favorite sketches, then transferred
these designs to styrofoam printing blocks.  Using brayers, they applied ink to the styrofoam printing blocks (see Tyler, above left) then
printed onto paper.  Repeating the tile designs resulted in new and surprising shapes that were fun to see emerging on the page.  Some
students purposely rotated their prints to achieve certain effects.  Once the page was filled with prints, the ink was allowed to dry till the
next week.  The final step was to add color to the prints with markers.  (see Caitlin and Kate, above right).
