Art Start
Clay Coil Pots
Art Start students made clay coil pots using air-dry clay.  First
they used a rolling pin to roll a slab and cut out a shape for the
base.  Then they rolled coils (like long thin snakes) and attached
them to the base using a "scratch and slip" technique to form the
walls.  Some students made lids, others did not.  Some smoothed
the coils, others let them show.  The pots sat in the bay window
for a week so they could dry completely (left).  Everyone painted
their pots with tempera paint, then Mrs. Thornton gave them a
shiny clear coat (below).
