My studio has been brimming with birds this fall: bird sculptures (above left) and real birds too: pet parakeets Pinecone and the late Partly Cloudy
(above middle) and a steady stream of wild bird visitors (see blue jays above middle). The sculptures took four Art Start classes to complete.   First,
students built armatures using newspaper, tape and cardboard, with wire feet and legs (above right, and stacks of them below left).  Then the kids
coated the armatures in traditional paper mache using strips of newspaper dipped in wheat paste (below middle).  They spent two classes adding
paper mache layers until the birds were nice and strong.  Finally the sculptures were painted with tempera and given a coat of polyurethane for
