This lesson is called Inside-Out Fruits and Veggies. Students from Art Start and Drawing and
Painting classes selected a fruit or vegetable from a fruit bowl. They carefully drew the outside as
realistically as possible, paying special attention to shape and detail. Then Mrs. Thornton cut the
fruit or veggie in half and students drew the cross-sections. It was exciting discovering the
beauty inside! The final drawings were painted with watercolors and mounted on colored paper.

Next, Art Start students read the book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak and
studied his characters. They created their own Wild Things by combining different parts of
animals into one creature. These fanciful drawings were made with oil crayon on black paper.

Next, a still life was set up in the art room. Students drew complicated objects like a guitar, an umbrella and an
old fashioned telephone from observation. They added color with colored pencils. Drawing from observation
teaches us to see detail, proportion, shapes and depth. Notice how no two are alike, even though everyone drew
the same group of objects!
