Kandinsky: Abstract Art Inspired by Music

Art Start students learned about Wasily Kandinsky,
who is considered the first Western artist to make
completely abstract art. We learned that Kandinsky
often made his paintings in response to classical
music. In the studio, we listened to some of
Kandinsky's favorite composers, including Wagner
and Schoenberg. We wrote words that came to
mind while listening to the music, then painted lines
with India ink (left). The following class was spent
adding color to our abstract compositions with
tempera paint (right).
