We started out this session learning about the life and
art of
Vincent Van Gogh.  Van Gogh liked to use
bright, vivid colors and energetic brush strokes.
Students chose one of Van Gogh's paintings to copy in
oil crayon.

Van Gogh loved painting self portraits-- he
painted over 40 of them!  So for our next
project we made our own
self portraits.
Students looked in mirrors to draw their
own faces.  Then they lay their winter
coats on the floor and carefully drew all of
the details: zippers, pockets, stripes, hoods,
and decorations.  They used tempera paint
for color.  They learned how to mix
colors-- primary colors, secondary colors,
tints and shades.

For the last project of the six week session, students painted glittering
snowflakes
.  After studying different snowflake images, they drew snowflake
designs in chalk, painted them white, and added glitter.  As in nature, no two
turned out alike!
