Art Start students spent three classes printmaking.  First they sketched four different African animals, and chose their
favorite.  (Below left, see Nora's lizard sketch.)  Then they transferred the sketch to a styrofoam printing plate.  Using a
roller called a brayer, they rolled ink onto the printing plate and pressed it upside down onto a sheet of white paper to
create a print.  More lines were carved from the printing plate, and another print was made on top of the old one in a
different color.  Each child made several prints, adding printed borders to some prints and embellishing others by adding
oil crayon.   Everyone ended up with many beautiful works of art, all originating from one printing plate!

Art Start
November - December, 2006
For the next project, Art Start students painted boxes
with a winter or holiday theme to give as gifts.  They
drew in pencil first, then painted with tempera.
This one-day project provided a fun end to the session.  Students stretched their imaginations to
design their
ultimate bedrooms.  If you look closely,  you'll see multiple room suites with swimming
pools, exotic pets, a roller coaster, a soccer field, and a few cotton candy machines.  Wow!
