Paper Mache Boxes
For this project, we started with small wooden boxes in a variety of shapes.  Students
brainstormed lots of creative ideas for turning the boxes into sculptures.  Students drew
three different boxes then sketched a sculpture idea for each box, eventually settling on a
favorite.  Next, to make that favorite idea "come to life", armatures were built onto the
boxes using newspaper, foil, and masking tape.  The following week, paper mache was
applied to the armatures.  Finally, the third week they painted the sculptures with
tempera.  Each sculpture is also a functional box with a removable lid!
