Art Start students spent four classes working on
cityscapes. First we looked at photographs of cities and
talked about concepts like skylines, skyscrapers,
architecture, bridges and waterfronts. Everyone was eager
to share their experiences traveling to different cities,
especially our own Chicago. We started by sketching from
the imagination, focusing on overlapping, details, and filling
the page. Then we cut, layered and glued pieces of
cardboard on to a background to make low-relief
cityscapes. We covered the cardboard cityscapes in foil,
rubbing the foil to reveal the shapes underneath. Last, we
added color with permanent markers.
