Art Start students learned about Henri Rousseau, a French artist who lived in the
1800's. Rousseau liked to paint jungle scenes like the one on the left, although he
never saw a real jungle. For inspiration, he would draw the plants he saw in France.
We did something similar by drawing Mrs.Thornton's house plants, then putting
animals and critters in the scenes, often carefully camouflaged. Students traced each
other's plant sketches into their pictures to achieve a wide variety of foliage like
Rousseau, filling up the foreground, middle ground and background. (See above,
tracing in the window) The final pictures were colored with markers.
