For this project, Art Start students studied a type of
Mexican folk art called
alebrije. (right)  Alebrijes are
whimsical sculptures of animals or make believe
creatures made from paper mache or carved out of
wood.  They are painted with vibrant colors in decorative
patterns.  For their own sculptures, students first built
armatures out of newspaper, aluminum foil, and tape.  
Then they applied paper mache, painted a base coat, and
finally added details.  (see Colin, left) Check out the
