Art Start
Drawing from observation is an important skill for every artist to develop.
For this project, Art Start students practiced drawing simple, and not so
simple, machines.  To warm up, they spent the first class drawing tools and
household gadgets.  They looked for details, shape, proportion, and ways to
make their drawings look 3-D, including showing two sides at once,
overlapping and shading.  The next class was spent drawing a bike, applying
the same concepts they learned for drawing the tools (left). To keep such a
complicated subject from feeling overwhelming, we looked at one small part
at a time, noticing that even complicated objects are made up of many simple
shapes.  Those who finished early drew what they saw around the bike for
their background.
