Art Start students started out this session drawing, painting and sculpting butterflies. First they studied many different kinds
of butterflies, learning about their different parts and how they are shaped and colored. They did practice sketches, then
large-scale tempera paintings. Finally they sculpted butterflies with clay and painted them.

Next, Art Start students blasted off to outer space. They mixed facts with heavy doses of imagination to create colorful planets, stars, rocket
ships, comets and aliens. The pictures below were created by first drawing with chalk on black paper, then covering those lines with glue. Once
the glue was dry, color was added with chalk pastels.

This classic art project teaches the concept of symmetry through drawing and paper folding. Children draw two separate pictures, in this case two
spring flower studies. They "accordian fold" the two pictures, cut them along the fold lines, then reassemble the two pictures in an "A, B" pattern.
The finished accordian fold flower pictures hang from a piece of yarn. Perfect for spring!

We expanded on the accordian fold concept by learning
some origami. These projects were printed out from a

Art Start students learned about the famous American
Artist Jackson Pollock and his "drip paintings". We
made some of our own... outside.
