Art Start students kicked off the winter session by illustrating their original poems about winter.  First they "brainstormed" about
winter, coming up with lots of ideas for topics.  (As you'll see below, some popular topics were sledding, hot cocoa, and snowball
fights!)  Then each child chose how they wanted to work.  Some started with words, others started with drawings.  The youngest
students dictated words to Mrs. Thornton.  Eventually, an illustrated poem was drawn on bristol board in pencil.  Students added
color with paint and/or colored pencil, then outlined with black Sharpies.  Mrs. Thornton explained that professional poets and
illustrators use these same techniques,  from brainstorming to final art, and that everyone works a little differently.
For the next project of the session, Art Start students made clay self portraits.  First they looked in
mirrors and drew pencil sketches of their own faces.  Then they rolled out clay "slabs" with a rolling pin
and cut the slabs into square tile shapes.  They drew their faces in the clay with clay tools.  They added
clay to make some parts of the tile taller and carved clay away to make other areas recessed.  When the
clay dried out and became hard, they painted the self portraits with tempera paint.
