I grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois.  I made the drawing on the
left when I was four.  It shows my mom, me, my dad and my
sister Rhonda on the roof of our green house.  I had a pet
parakeet who liked to sit on our heads when I was a kid (Perry,
above and left).  Now I have a parakeet named Pinecone (see
Pinecone below, exploring the sunflowers in my studio, 2009).
In college, I got to take lots of art classes and spend time with kids
as I studied how to be an art teacher.  Really, what could be more
fun? Teaching art to children is the best job in the world. There I
am on the left with a kindergarten class.  I graduated from the
University of Illinois with a BFA in art education.  After I graduated
I taught art at two elementary schools in Mt. Prospect for three
years, Euclid and Indian Grove.  Unfortunately, back then in the
stone age, I was using slide film!  So all of my pictures from that
era are not so easy to put on my website.

(a short) biography
Christine Thornton
This is me with my husband Scott in the Colorado Rockies (left).  Here are our children Jake and Hannah several years ago camping in Michigan
(middle) and in Yellowstone 2011 (right).  I quit teaching when Jake and Hannah were born so I could be a stay-at-home mom.  During that time
we converted our dining room into an art studio and I took up painting again.  When Hannah entered kindergarten in 2005, I started teaching
art
lessons from my home studio and continue to do so today. I also teach art programs at libraries throughout the Chicago area and make my own
art, which ranges from ceramic sculptures to children's book illustration to knitting.  I'm so grateful for the chance to work with children and their
creative explorations.  To read more about my philosophy of art education,
