This lesson is called Inside-Out Fruits and Veggies. Students
selected a fruit or vegetable from a fruit bowl. They carefully
drew the outside as realistically as possible, paying special
attention to shape and detail. Then Mrs. Thornton cut the fruit
or veggie in half and students drew the cross-sections. It was
exciting discovering the beauty inside! The final drawings were
painted with watercolors and mounted on colored paper.

Next, Drawing & Painting students learned about Henri Matisse, an artist who often painted the still life. Then a
still life was set up for students to draw. The still life included complicated objects like a guitar, an umbrella and
an old fashioned telephone. We practiced drawing from observation, paying special attention to detail,
proportion, shapes and depth. Color was added with colored pencil and tempera paint. Notice how no two
projects turned out alike, even though everyone drew the same group of objects!
