"Dragons, Unicorns and Beyond:  
How to Draw Mythological Creatures"
 
Attention, Harry Potter fans!  Eragon admirers!  Dragonolgy buffs! This drawing
workshop is for you.  
Using a Power Point presentation, lively discussion, and a
variety of books and
figurines, Christine teaches about five mythological creatures
and how to draw them.  All drawing materials are provided.




"Designing Book Covers"  
This workshop is perfect for Young Authors events.  Students bring in finished stories
and create a cover illustration.  Christine shows several popular books' covers,
analyzing them with students to determine what makes them successful.  Then she
walks them through the process she followed when illustrating the cover of her book.
("Heading to the Wedding," right)   Each student creates a finished cover illustration (if
time allows).  
All drawing materials are provided.




"How to Draw People:
Figure Drawing for Kids"
Figure drawing is one of the most important skills an artist can develop, and it's never
too early to start.  Christine teaches techniques for drawing people that anyone can
master, using careful observation of live models posed with props and costumes.  All
materials are provided.
                 




"Design Your Own Comic"
Crazy for comics?  Come to this workshop and learn about several comic strips,
including Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, and Iron Man.  Then design your own main
character, complete with a nemesis and a side kick.  All drawing materials are
provided.

Christine Thornton is a certified art teacher and working artist who visits schools and libraries throughout the

During her illustrator visits, Christine shares the journey she followed to become an
illustrator.  Using Power Point, she outlines the development of her art, from age 5 to
present.  She shows photographs of her home studio and drawings and paintings from
her book, "Heading to the Wedding".  She shares her illustration process from rough
sketches to finished art, including "tricks" that illustrators use to make their work easier.  
Students learn how a book is published, and the roles played by author, illustrator and
publisher.  The presentation ends with a question and answer session. Supplemental
materials for teachers and signed bookmarks are included.
