Clay Tile Sculptures

Art Start February 2018

For this low relief sculpture project, students started by sketching an idea, using whatever subject matter they wished. Each student was given two small rectangular pieces of paper, one smaller than the other. The two sketches could go together as a set or stand alone separate from each other. The following week they learned how to roll clay slabs. They used templates to trace and cut out four rectangles from their slabs, two big and two little. The sketches were traced onto one rectangle, then the image and a border were cut out and attached to the second rectangle using scratch and slip. The air dry clay was allowed to harden, then the final class was spent painting with acrylics.
