Metal Foil Tooling

Art Start May 2016

For this project we explored real (tactile) and implied (visual) texture with metal tooling. First, free choice designs were sketched on paper, then transferred to 36 gage tooling foil. A pad of newspaper was placed under the foil to allow the wooden stylus to sink in a bit. After the design was drawn, the stylus was used for further "tooling" by rubbing on the front to make some parts of the design recede, and on the back to make others come forward. Then the design was extended off the foil by drawing onto the black background paper. Color was added with permanent markers and colored pencils.
