Paper Mache Birds

Art Start September 2017

Art Start students made paper mache birds this fall. They started by looking at photos and sketching their subject, with the option of making a realistic or imaginary bird. Next they built armatures (the internal structure) using newspaper, cardboard, foil and masking tape. Feet were made of wire then taped to cardboard to help them stand during the building process. Then the artists covered their armatures with layers of paper mache.  They dipped strips of newspaper in wheat paste (a mixture of flour and water) then wrapped those strips carefully around the armature parts. We spent two classes adding these layers of paper mache.  When the sculptures were dry and hard, the final step was to paint with acrylics. They turned out great!
